Alvis Choi

Alvis Choi a.k.a. Alvis Parsley is a Toronto-based artist, performer, facilitator and researcher born and raised in Hong Kong. Alvis has presented at the SummerWorks Performance Festival, Mayworks Festival, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics – Encuentro, Performance Studies international (PSi), Rhubarb Festival, National Queer Arts Festival (Bay Area), Gladstone Hotel, World Pride 2014 and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Alvis is named in the 2014 list of BLOUIN ARTINFO Canada’s 30 Under 30. They are a finalist of Toronto Arts Foundation’s inaugural TELUS Newcomer Artist Award and a recipient of Neighbourhood Arts Network’s BMO Seeds Fund. Alvis has received grants, fellowship, and mentorship from Vtape, Jumblies Theatre, Diaspora Dialogues, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), and the British Council.
Alvis was an Artist in Residence at lemonTree creations and Videofag, and a Community Artist for the Art Gallery of Ontario at the Chinatown Festival. Their project Chinatown Community Think Tank was featured on CBC Radio, Rabble.ca, and Fairchild TV, a Canadian Cantonese TV channel with coverage across Canada. Alvis served on the Programming Committee of Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival 2013 and worked as Interning Emerging Community Artist at Red Dress Productions.
In 2015, Alvis was appointed as the Chairperson of the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter. They work closely with Butterfly (Asian and Migrant Sex Workers Support Network) as an artist, organizer, and coordinator. Alvis is completing their Master’s degree in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University in 2016.
