Margaret Christakos

WRITER/MENTOR
Born and raised in Sudbury, Canada, Margaret Christakos has worked as a poet, writer, editor, instructor, and poetry culture builder in Toronto since the late 1980s. Her body of work includes ten collections of poetry, numerous chapbooks, a novel, and an intergenre memoir. She has been shortlisted for the Trillium Book Award and the Pat Lowther Memorial Award, and is a recipient of a Chalmers Arts Fellowship, the ReLit Award for poetry, ARC Magazine’s Critic’s Desk Award, and the Bliss Carman Award. Among her titles are Charisma, Excessive Love Prostheses, Sooner, What Stirs, Welling, Multitudes, and Her Paraphernalia: On Motherlines, Sex/Blood/Loss & Selfies. Space Between Her Lips: The Poetry of Margaret Christakos, selected by Gregory Betts, was published in 2017 (Laurier Poetry Series). In 2020, Talonbooks published her poetry collection charger. Chapbooks include Adult Video, The Chips and Ties Study, Retreat Diary 2019 and Social Medea Vs. Virtual Medusa. In April 2021, her new poetry collection, Dear Birch, is forthcoming from Palimpsest Press.

Her undergraduate focus was in the Visual Arts (B.F.A. York University, 1980–1985). In 1995 she completed an M.A. in Education at OISE, University of Toronto.

Margaret has held appointments as Writer in Residence at the University of Windsor, Western University, London Public Library, and the University of Alberta. She is associate faculty with the MFA program in creative writing at University of Guelph-Humber and, since 1992, has taught widely as a sessional, most recently at Ryerson University. In 2018–2019, she was Barker Fairley Distinguished Visitor at University College, University of Toronto. In Fall 2021, she will be Writer in Residence with Green College, UBC. She has three adult children and lives in Toronto.
