Mariama Abdullahi
WRITER/MENTEE
Mariama Ahmed is a writer and content marketer based in Toronto, Ontario. She holds an
honours double major from the University of Toronto in Professional Writing and
Communications and Anthropology.
Her writings focus on spirituality, women’s issues, history, representation, culture and
mass media. Her work and interviews have been featured on CBC’s Fresh Air and Life Rattle
Press.
In October 2016 Mariama received a scholarship from the Humber School of Writers to
workshop her writings with novelist Lawrence Hill. Following the workshop she was selected by
Diaspora Dialogues to continue her work with Hill for an extended 6-month mentorship.
When she’s not writing she memorizes the Qur’an and prophetic sayings of Prophet
Muhammad fulltime with her mentors in Toronto. She’s also a co-host of The Woman Up
Podcast, an open discussion with women of all walks of life from almost every continent as they
journey into self-betterment, one conversation at a time.
Mariama is currently working on her first book, The Veiled Student a memoir on her
journey with the niqab as a woman that veils. Recently she was awarded a $10,000 grant by the
Toronto Arts Council to support the further development of her manuscript.
